The United States hosts more Indian students than any other country, and India has been its leading source of international students since 2023/24.
The community
Open Doors 2025 counted 363,019 Indian students in the US in 2024/25, up 10% on the prior year and 30.8% of all 1,177,766 international students. India overtook China as the top place of origin in 2023/24, the first time since 2009. That year, growth was driven by graduate students (196,567) and students on Optional Practical Training (97,556). STEM graduates can extend post-completion OPT by 24 months.
