Austria is a smaller but growing destination for Indian students. Eurostat counts 995 degree-mobile students from India in 2023/24, roughly double the 2020 figure.
The community
Eurostat data show the number of Indian degree students in Austria rising every year from 482 in 2020 to 995 in 2023/24. Austrian higher education statistics for winter semester 2023/24 put India second among source countries outside the European Higher Education Area, after Iran. Non-EU students at public universities pay €726.72 per semester, and graduates from outside the EU can extend their student residence permit by 12 months to look for work or start a business. Vienna hosts UN organisations including the IAEA, UNIDO and UNODC, and ranked second in the EIU Global Liveability Index 2026.
In winter semester 2023/24 India was the second-largest source country of international students in Austria from outside the European Higher Education Area, with 762 students, behind Iran (1,264). Source
