Germany is a major destination for Indian students, and India is the largest country of origin of international students at German universities.

The community

Just under 59,000 Indian students were enrolled in Germany in the 2024/25 winter semester, 20 per cent more than a year earlier, making India the largest country of origin ahead of China (about 38,600). Their number rose by 186 per cent between the 2018/19 and 2024/25 winter semesters, and Indians make up almost 15 per cent of all international students. In the 2021/22 winter semester, 64 per cent of Indian students were enrolled in engineering. Graduates of German universities can receive a residence permit of up to 18 months to look for a job.

The number of Indian students in Germany grew by 186 per cent between the 2018/19 and 2024/25 winter semesters, to about 58,800. Source
