Australia is one of the largest destinations for Indian students, and India is its second-largest source of international students after China.
The community
Australian Government data show 139,720 Indian students enrolled across all sectors from January to September 2025, up 4% on 2024. In 2025, 56% of Indian enrolments were in higher education and 43% in vocational education and training. Victoria accounted for 43% of Indian enrolments and New South Wales for 25%. Under the Australia-India ECTA, Australia committed to post-study work rights for Indian graduates of up to 18 months for diplomas, two years for bachelor's degrees, three years for master's and four years for doctorates.
India made up 16% of international students in Australia in the year to May 2026, second only to China (23%). Source
