Japan is a smaller but growing destination for Indian students, with Indian enrolments rising 24% in the year to May 2025.
The community
JASSO counted 2,095 Indian students in Japan on 1 May 2025, up from 1,685 a year earlier, with 1,661 of them in higher education. Indians made up 0.5% of Japan's 408,069 international students. Japan's government set a goal in 2023 of hosting 400,000 international students by 2033, a figure it passed in 2025.
